The New Role of Brakes

For elevators, the brake is both a working device and a safety device. With the development of technology and the improvement of energy-saving and environmental protection requirements, more and more permanent magnet synchronous gearless traction machines will replace traditional worm gear and worm type traction machines. Therefore, there may be no need to install a separate upstream overspeed protection device. The brake of this type of permanent magnet synchronous gearless traction machine (which should undergo type testing) has an upstream overspeed protection function. According to the requirements of Article 9.10 of GB 7588-2003, the overspeed protection device for elevator cars is usually composed of two parts: a speed monitoring component and a deceleration actuator. The brake of a permanent magnet synchronous gearless traction machine (all brake components involved in applying force to the brake wheel or disc are assembled in two, which are considered to have internal redundancy) is used as a deceleration actuator to slow down or stop the elevator. Therefore, during the inspection, it is necessary to check whether the brake has a type test certificate and report with upward overspeed protection function, whether the brake is directly connected to the traction wheel as a rigid connection, and whether the brake is working properly with electrical devices, but it does not need to be connected to the safety circuit. The braking performance of its upstream overspeed protection should also comply with the relevant requirements of Article 9.10 of GB 7588-2003.

TSG T700-2009 requires elevator manufacturing units to provide type test certificates for the driving host. The author has reviewed some type test certificates and reports for the driving host, including the content of the brake. Compared to before, this provision adds an additional safety check in both the mechanical and electrical parts.
